The Middle Ages: Heresies and Mendicant Orders

In the 13th century, the Mendicant Orders emerged, founded on the renunciation of possessions and a life supported by almsgiving or work, but operating within the Church and in collaboration with it. Preaching became central: the friars settled in the cities, spoke in a simple and accessible way, and gradually committed their sermons and teachings to writing. Among the principal orders, the Franciscans stood out, valuing the concrete example of poverty, penance, and service to the marginalized (with the Canticle of the Creatures as a cultural testimony), and the Dominicans, oriented towards solid theological formation and the defense of orthodoxy against heresies.
